Join Matthew Rodreick, Kate Willette, and guests for our weekly podcast talking about everything related to finding a cure for paralysis after spinal cord injury (including what is a cure???). In the beginning we’ll talk a lot about Kate’s remarkable book, Don’t Call It a Miracle: The Movement to Cure Spinal Cord Injury. It was definitely the impetus to start this podcast, and lays the foundation for current and future conversations about how members of the SCI community can push for more and faster recovery.
Why should we care about the science and the whole process of bringing therapies to the clinic? Because that knowledge is fundamental to gaining a voice in decision-making. Dr. Anthony Fauci, a scientist at the NIH, had this to say about the AIDS activists:
“They elevated themselves by their own self-education on these things. And then it became very clear that you weren’t going to mess with these people, because they knew exactly what you were talking about – and they knew exactly what they were talking about.” (From the film “How to Survive a Plague”, 2012, directed by David France)
